Today, I am excited to share with you about my independent study project, in grade 11, focussing on choreography. To begin, I must emphasize the significance of the independent study project, it is not only nurturing our interest, but also developing our skills to benefit the society. Along with the values of the DDP, in my project I delve into the realm of choreography with a specific focus on the following event; utilising dance as a medium to advocate for the rights of women facing adversity.
Throughout my journey of self-directed learning, I extensively utilised online resources to enhance my choreography skills. I sought classes that offered techniques for infusing self-expression into movements and other specialised skills for modern dance. However, my endeavors were met with challenges, especially when certain unforeseen circumstances disrupted my plans. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, despite being away from my dance studio in Changzhou during AP exams, I adapted by seeking alternative spaces, such as my aunt’s work place to continue my practice. I also encountered difficulties in harmonizing dance movements with music, but through perseverance, attentive learning, observation and reflection, I overcame these obstacles.
Through my inspiration of movements, music as their telling, I discovered the transformative power of dance in amplifying marginalized voices and shedding light on pressing societal issues. Moreover, I found inspiration in the stories of real woman who have faced discrimination and adversity, driving me to choreograph pieces that captures the essence of their struggles and accomplish. By infusing my dance routines with narratives of courage and hope, I aim to raise awareness and provoke thoughts among audiences about the challenges that women around the world continue to endure.
In the process of creating and refining my choreography I also honed essential skills such as patience, adaptability, and creative problem solving. Each obstacle I encountered, whether it be a technical difficulty or logistical setback, presented an opportunity for growth and learning. Through perseverance and resilience, I was able to resolve these challenges and emerge as a more skilled and confident choreographer.
I am immensely grateful for the unwavering support and guidance of my teachers who facilitated my practice by providing a conducive space and expressing confidence in my abilities. I am also thankful to DDP for empowering me with the opportunity to explore and nurture my passions and talents.
To fellow students who engage in similar projects, I urge you not to be constrained by societal expectations, without regarding the alignment of your interest with conventional paths. Embrace your passions wholeheartedly and engage your genuine curiosity and will fill you with a sense of purpose. Furthermore, I encourage you to remain vigilant, vocal, and empathetic in the face of injustice, as our collective resilience and determination are paramount in affecting positive change.
In conclusion, the independent study project not only makes for personal growth and skill development, but also serves as a platform for advocating social causes through creative expression. Let us harness our talents and passions to inspire positive change and make meaningful contributions to the world around us.
